Each year on Gaudete Sunday, the Third Sunday of Advent, children in Rome bring their Baby Jesus figures from the cribs in their homes to St. Peter’s Square where the Pope blesses both them and the figurines during the Angelus. In 2015 the Catholic Grandparents’ Association (CGA) introduced Bambinelli Sunday as an initiative in Ireland and this year they hope to encourage more parishes, schools and families to participate in the tradition by bringing their ‘Bambinelli’ to be blessed on Gaudete Sunday (11 December). According to CGA founder Catherine Wiley ‘This helps to focus children on the real, true reason for Christmas; the birth of our Lord Jesus.’
