The English and Welsh delegation have begun to arrive in Milan for the 7th World Meeting of Families. The official delegation is led by Rt Rev John Hine, Chair of the Bishops’ Committee for Marriage and Family Life and comprises Clara Donnelly, Coordinator of Marriage & Family Life Ministry in the Diocese of Shrewsbury, her husband Charles, Elizabeth Davies, Marriage and Family Life Project Officer at CBCEW and Edmund Adamus, Director of Family Ministry in the Archdiocese of Westminster. This is Clara and Charles’ third World Meeting; they took part in the 5th WMF in Valencia in 2006 and the 6th in 2009 in Mexico City where they represented the Bishops’ Committee for Marriage and Family Life.
Elizabeth Davies reports: “Clara, Charles and I flew in from Manchester this afternoon and immediately went over to the Fiero Milano Congressi to pick up our accreditations and explore the facilities there. We watched the children of Milan practice for tomorrow’s opening ceremony and toured the exhibits prior to opening. There is already a wonderful atmosphere in the city with people from many nationalities gathering and the hosts offering us a warm welcome. We are excited to be here and eager to learn what we can from the Theological and Pastoral Congress which starts tomorrow. As official delegates four of us can attend a special concert on Thursday in honour of Pope Benedict at La Scala Opera House – a once in a lifetime treat!”
