The Friends of Familias invite you to join them at “The Love of Parents: The Gift That Makes Society” their 2012 annual gathering, on Tuesday May 15th, at Carrs Lane Church Centre, Birmingham B4 7SX from 11.00am-3.30pm.

FAMILIAS is the professional association of diocesan coordinators of family ministry within the Catholic church in England and Wales. Each year it invites members, associates and friends to gather on a topic of current interest.

This year it has selected parenting as the focus for the Friends event. As the English and Welsh bishops wrote in 2004, ‘The love of parents is the gift that makes society possible.’ A number of Catholic dioceses have long experience of trying to make parenting programmes universally available – an effort that now finds resonance both in the National Parenting Initiative (launched by a consortium of other Christian churches) and in the recent announcement by Rt Hon Sarah Teather, Minister of State for Children and Families, of three government funded trials of universal parenting classes.  This year’s Friends event will provide a unique opportunity to learn more about these two national initiatives and a project in Leeds and Wakefield funded by the bishops to increase universal access to parenting classes. Participants will have an opportunity to reflect in small groups about the implications for their own practice, the opportunities and challenges of delivering universal parenting programmes and what they might need in order to move forward.

This year the event has been organised in collaboration with the Family Caring Trust, a well-respected provider of programmes to those working within the Catholic community as well as many others in the statutory and third sectors.

If you would like to attend the event please contact Deacon Peter Lavery (Membership Secretary), Co-ordinator for Marriage & Family Life, Diocese of Hexham & Newcastle on 07505 683864.
